What do students need to do now to prepare for Welcome Week?
- Mark calendars for Wednesday, August 27 as the start of your college experience!
- Plan family vacations and work schedules early so that you will be able to start Welcome Week activities on Wednesday, August 27.
- Look for a mailing in July that will ask you to create your Welcome Week profile and select your program options.
2008 Welcome Week Schedule at a Glance
Wednesday, August 27: Move In & Get Settled
- Move In: Welcome Week Leaders & Community Advisors will greet you and help you move into your residence hall room.
- Meet your small group members!
- Convocation: Your official welcome to the start of your college experience. This program includes a welcome from President Bruininks and current students, dinner, music, and an introduction to U of M’s history and traditions.
Thursday, August 28: College Day
- College Activities: Explore what it means to be a member of your college of enrollment. You will learn academic expectations, meet advisers and faculty members, form study groups, meet students with whom you may share classes, and learn what your college has to offer you.
- Keynote Speaker: Jermaine Davis, a local communications professor, will share his own life challenges and offer advice on how to stay motivated, succeed academically, and achieve your full potential.
Friday, August 29: University Day
- Learn to navigate the full Twin Cities campus: East Bank, West Bank, and St. Paul
- Attend a variety of sessions depending on your interest: health & wellness, money management, study skills, safety resources and tips, diversity
- Tours of East Bank, West Bank, and St. Paul
- Pep Rally: Learn the rouser, meet Gopher Sport athletes and learn to be a Golden Gopher!
Saturday, August 30: Community Day
- Attend the Student Organization Fair and find a group with which to get involved
- Meet local businesses at the Business Fair and collect freebies and coupons
- Attend the first Gopher Football game
- Take a side trip to explore points of interest in the Twin Cities
Sunday, August 31: Community Service Day
- Learn about the U’s dedication to service and involvement
- Participate in a service project to benefit a group or issue for which you have passion
- Target Run: Spend a late night shopping at Target and participate in U of M trivia and karaoke
Monday, September 1: Prepare for Classes
- Take the day to relax and prepare for classes
- Participate in optional activities coordinated by Welcome Week Leaders: walk your route to class, take a tour of coffee shops, bike ride around campus
